 America Writes for Kids:  Search for information about authors and their books alphabetically or by state.  Then visit their links for more about young readers and writers, authors and books.

 ALA:  American Library Association' official web site.

Eric Carle Museum of Picture Books: The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Books opened in Amherst, Massachusetts in November 2002. Visit its official web site to check out their bibliography, reading recommendations, and more.

The Children's Literature Web Guide:  A site that attempts to gather together and categorize the growing number of Internet resources related to books for Children and Young Adults.  Much of the information that you can find through its pages is provided by others: fans, schools, libraries, and commercial enterprises involved in the book world.

Publicity Insider: If you're struggling to learn the ins and outs of getting publicity, there's a new site that will really help you. PublicityInsider.com is the brainchild of Bill Stoller, a public relations expert. It's filled with articles, advice and great tips that demystify the publicity process and offers real hands-on instruction on writing press releases, developing a newsworthy angle and pitching it to reporters.

 Publishing LawA web site for authors that covers the business and legal side of publishing; contains article and downloadable forms for use in collaboration or work for hire.

Rachel Simon: This is the site of Rachel Simon, writer and author of Riding the Bus with my Sister. It contains great writing tips and motivational information.

 RhymeZone:  Online Rhyming dictionary and thesaurus, as well as other great features like works by Shakespeare, famous quotations, Mother Goose rhymes, famous documents like the Old and New Testaments, the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and more.

 Self-Publishing:  Free listing site for self-published authors and small publishers (intended to be a resource for people looking for books that may otherwise be difficult to find). 

Subject Guides for Good Information:  Instead of using a search engine and wading through thousands of irrelevant hits, consider a subject guide.  The following can lead you to site that a qualified person has selected.

Writers Market.com: This site provides comprehensive, up-to-date, market contact info available, with useful electronic tools such as Submission Tracker to help you manage submissions. Sites of Historical Fiction

Historical Fiction by Date:  Lists several dozen historical novels in chronological order by the year in which they're set, starting with "prehistoric times" and moving to 1989.

Internet School Library Media Center Historical Fiction Page:  A terrific site focusing especially on YA historical fiction.  Links to many other sites, divided into sections on Awards, The Genre, Bibliographies, Unit and Lesson plans, and Some YA Authors of Historical Fiction.  The section on The Genre includes links to many articles about the challenges of writing historical fiction.

Multnuomah County Library:  From Multnuomah County Library in Portland, Oregon.  One of many similar postings that are arranged by historical periods.  Most of these sites, including this one, focus heavily on American history, jumping from the medieval period to American colonial history while bypassing the rest of the globe.

Scott O'Dell Award:  A listing of all the books that have won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction since 1984, when it was first given.


Writer's Workshops

Barnes and Noble Online Courses:  A FREE online children's writer workshop is available on the Barnes and Noble web site.  Just click on the "Online Courses" button on the horizontal bar near the top of the home page, then click on "Browse All Courses."  Next click on the "Writing for Children" link under Literature and Language, and register.  The course was designed by children's author Tracy Dils.

Children's Author's Bootcamp:  A weekend-long fiction writing workshop, led by Laura Backes, Publisher of Children's Book Insider, and children's book author Linda Arms White.
