I'm glad someone is doing children's books w/Hispanic angle. My wife is a bilingual teacher & has trouble finding literature that reflects the Hispanic/Latino experience. Keep up the good work!

Just wanted to drop a note and say Hi! We met you and David on the Norwegian Sea. I am planning on purchasing your book for my neices & nephews for Christmas. Would you be willing to autograph these for me? If this would be to much trouble please let me know, but I will send you a return UPS ticket for you to return them to me, therefore it would not cost you anything. Meeting you both on the curise was one of the highlights of our trip and we hope to someday see you again!

Please write if you get a chance, but for now have a Wonderful Day!!

Your cruise friend,

Reese & Paul Orler (the lady with the broken foot!)

Hi Marisa I like your site very much. It's a very bright and happy site, and looks like so much fun to spend time in. Parents can visit your site with their children and introduce them to your books. Sometimes a visit to the book store is overwhelming, "so many books" and it's hard to make a decision, the children can be tired and not choose the book they really want. Good luck.

Bravo! Your web site is first class. I am also a writer and member of SCBWI. I live in Washington State. Two years ago I took an early retirement and began rewriting my middle grade children's novel (waiting patiently in my desk for over ten years!), joined a critique group, began reading award-winning children's books (I'll look for yours in the Library), submitted my work to two editors at conferences, and taking their advice, began a final rewrite. What fun I've had! I will use your excellent Fun with Words page to "tweak" here and there before I submit. In my story, one of my minor character's is named Marisa. She is 20, short, dark-haired, bouncy, energetic, athletic, and warm -- a good model for the younger characters. I'll let you know if my book gets published...thanks for your informative website!

Yes, this is your cousin. How are you doing? I'm still living in San Diego. I was amazed when I accidentally came across your web site. I have to say that looking at what you have accomplished makes me very proud to know that it's in the family. I have been struggling with my artistic qualities. I paint using oil, pastels, and pencil. I have been painting for the past 4 years. I'm self taught, although Papi, (Juan Montes), has an artistic flare. Growing up, I watched him sketch, and paint. I guess it's in the genes because I now have a deep desire, and passion to paint. I have sold some of my paintings as well. Enough of me, I just can't get over the fact that you are a writer, and painter. I would love to see more of both your art, and your books. I would also enjoy showing you my work. Whenever you get this message please feel free to either call me: (760) 583-2918, or email me at: diegomontes@hotmail.com. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for answering my extended questions about critique processes. I have had almost identical experiences to the ones you described. When I reached the point of having a regular editor/publisher of my work, and his comments were more useful than anything that went before, I stopped using anyone else. Actually, I tapered off. I tried three more sources before I quit asking anyone to read and critique. I still critique for others. It is the best education I had in fiction writing, except the professional publishers. I have the nasty habit of telling the authors the kind of things my editors told me. Those pieces of professional advice were priceless. I wanted to share. The authors I try to help want the tea parties. (Great term. I always said they wanted fuzzy grams.) Sigh. I want to share my newly finished work with others, but not in the old way, where they do not know as much as I do, especially when they are stuck in the line-editing stage, or when they can only give fuzzy grams. Hearing my experiences through you was very reassuring. Writing can be such an alone profession that we do not always know others have shared our feelings and experiences. An agent can fill the gap and make abrupt (they are busy), but priceless, suggestions. Mine got sick, so I am really flying solo right now. I have recommendations on a likely replacement. For now, your open honesty filled the hole.

Hello Marisa, ME ENCANTAN TUS LIBROS, I love your books and my kids too! I always liked Juan Bobo's stories, so I bought Juan Bobo goes to work and my kids loved it. My daughter Solimar(7)last year she was a first grader, and she had to do a book report at the end of the year, and guess what? she used your book. She was very pleased that everyone enjoyed her book report. I just bought Something wicked on on the woods, but my son C.J.(11)wants to read it first. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent with us. My daughter will like to know if someday you will be writing a book about El Coqui, Soli is in love with coquies, my family in P.R. sent her some coqui stuff, she was six yrs. old the first time she heard the sound of El coqui, and from that moment she fell in love with him. I will be in the look out for Gabi's series. Again thank you so much for your beautiful books, stories and poems. Take care and God Bless you. Cariños, Marisol, Solimar y C.J.

Our class is a bilingual class and we read A Crazy, Mixed-Up Spanglish and we loved it. Now we are reading the next Gabi book, Who's That Girl? The students want me to tell you that they love your books about Gabi and they want to keep reading more and more of them. They think the books are funny, interesting and they like how there are spanish words in it. One thing they liked was that we are studying antonyms and synonyms and then we read in Who's That Girl that Gabi is also studying synonyms and antonyms. They say you are a great author, they like your website, and hope to meet you someday. They really want you to come to our school, Fairsite Elementary in Galt, California, so we will do what we can to email you more details about the invitation. Con carino, The students of Mr. Nelson's 3rd Grade Class.

I absolutely loved your book, "A Circle of Time"!!!! I don't know what it is about time travel books with a bit of romance and mystery, but they just hook me!! You did an awesome job!!! I couldn't bear to put it down and with my high school scheudule as a junior, i was able to still read it in about 3 days!!! Thanks for being a writer and for writing good books for the youth of America, because the number of good books is slowly lowering! Thank you so much!! GREAT JOB!! Do you think anymore of those types of time travel romance mystery are in store for your writing career? I hope so!! Have a great day! Thanks Ruth

I just finished reading Get Ready for Gabi #1 with my 7 yr old son and I LOVED IT! I can't wait to get more of your books. I am from Puerto Rico and I live in an area where there are no hispanics and my kids have very little exposure to the language (my husband don't speak spanish either) I try to buy books in spanish for my kids but they are often books that are translated from english and honestly it is not the same. It was refreshing to read a children's book written by a Puertorrican. It is fun to share the culture with my son. I identified with Gabi's family and I hope my kids will too. Thank you and keep up your excellent work. I am looking forward to read more about Gabí's adventures and to meeting new characters.

Hi, I just read the book Get Ready for Gaby - A crazy Mixed-up Spanglish Day and I absolutely loved it. I can't wait to read the next one. I am a 3rd grade puertorican teacher in Miami and reading this book really took me back to Puerto Rico with all the idioms and the things the family does. I am glad someone is finally writing about puertoricans in a nice way! Thank you for bringing this great pleasure to me and as soon as read it to my students I am sure they will get just as much pleasure. I got the book through Scholastic as a free gift and I am delighted to have gotten it! I hope the other books are just as enjoyeable. Thanks again!!!!

During one of Marianne's visits I mentioned to her that I had finished writing my book "Confessions of a Brazilian Bikini Waxer" telling the tales that heppen during the BBW process and told her that I was stuck not knowing the next step. Any advice? Do you know any agent that would be willing to help me to publish it? I am affraid that due to the spicy stories and being such a taboo in this society I may not get somebody interested in helping me. What do you think? Any comment would be greatly appreciated. By the way your books were the perfect gifts to my nephew and nieces in Boston. They loved it!! Thanks a million for your help. Sincerely, Reny

Marisa, I am just beginning a career as an Elementary School teacher in New York. I first fell in love with Gabi, but I know see how dedicated a writer you are with your collection of poems and picture books. I look forward to sharing your literature with my children. My summer school students are enjoying "No More Spanish" - which is outside of our predetermined curriculum. ahem... I agree very much with you views on bilingual education in the United States. Although I was born here, my mother, too, refused to speak English with us at home, and she continues to do so now. In early childhood, children soak up information like sponges. Learning languages, in particular, come almost second nature to children. At a young age, especially when suddenly immersed into a new language, I believe the human survival element becomes involved and allows children to learn new languages fairly quickly. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your inclusion literature. We need more bilingual writers - of all languages - to dispel the myth of Only-English Speaking Americanism. You're great! shakila m.

It was especially ineresting to them because most of them are Mexican American children and they are bilingual. As their teacher I was excited to see the similies and idoms in the book. We are working very hard to learn to write interesting stories and essays. Your use of figurative language is a fantastic model. They were thrilled to find the second book in the series at our school book fair. They can't wait to read your books! They tell me they want MORE! I have some letters that my students wrote that I will send through the mail. Thank you for sharing Gabi with us! Laurie Young

Dear Marisa, How are you? I am writing on behalf of Marshall Cavendish International Asia, a publishing company based in Singapore in the Southeast Asian region. I am looking for an author for our second edition of Cultures of the World: Puerto Rico. Being a Puerto Rican and a children's book author, I thought you would be just who we need. Would you be interested in revising the book? The title was first published about 10 years ago. We need a writer with a good knowledge of Puerto Rico to correct and update the existing text as well as write a new chapter (on environmental issues) and provide information for the backmatter (which includes two recipes, three maps, economic and cultural notes, a historical timeline, and further-information references). Each book has around 120 pages, roughly half given to text and half to photographs. It is written for North American students ages 12-15. If you'd like to take on the project, we would need you to submit the materials in full by 21 Jan 2005. We will then edit the text and send you the pages for your comment some time in March/April, after which we will pay you the fee. Please contact me soon so that I can provide you with more information. I hope to hear from you very soon. Thanks and best regards, Nafisah Ismail Editor General & Reference Marshall Cavendish International (Asia) Pte Ltd Times Centre, 1 New Industrial Road Level 3, S 536196 DID: 6213 9318 Fax: 6285 4871 www.marshalllcavendish.com/genref

We'd love a visit if you are ever in Menasha, WI. My third grade bilingual class loves Gabi...in both languages! We believe becoming proficient in English AND Spanish is easy, fun, and academically the best. We love how your books address the funny Spanglish situations our minds sometimes send out our mouths. Since we just finished reading about Puerto Rico, singing a song about the coqui in both languages, and welcoming a new student from there, the book was especially of interest to us. Thanks for your stories. Mrs. Pomplun's class. Gegan Elementary, Menasha, WI.Name: Tommm

I just have to tell you how much my daughter loves your book Egg-napped. I have been reading it to her since she was just a few months old. We kiss & "pet" the baby at the end of the book each time we read it. She is now 12 months & will pick it up & "read" it herself. The poor book is VERY well worn! I knew we had read it a lot when we went for a walk & saw a squirrel & my husband said, "Look, there's Kit." :) Thank you for such a cute, high-quality piece of literature!

Nowadays, due to the improvements of technology and the development of the Internet everyone can watch live football from a comfortable seat at home, and all this without paying expensive cable or satellite fees. Now you can watch premiership games, champions league soccer, cup matches live, all broadcasted on the Internet, sometimes free and sometimes after paying a small fee. You can enjoy many quality football matches easier then ever. How can you do this? Almost every soccer match that is taking place somewhere in the world is broadcasted through a live football stream that you can access from anywhere and furthermore most of the matches come with an English commentary. So whenever there's a major football event you know that it's certainly broadcasted somewhere on the Internet and you can watch everything and you only pay a few dollars! My Grandfather - John Eraquio Monte, born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. In 1900, he left for the Hawaiian Islands and upon arrival had a job waiting for him as a 'Luna' at the Makiki Agricultural Experiment Station (the pre-cursor of Univ of Hawaii, Manoa). In 1914, he started his own business: THE MONTE DAIRY, also in Makiki area - the only certified raw milk diary on Oahu at that time. One day I hope to find my familia in Mayaguez - and one day I hope all of you get to visit Hawaii!

I loved your book, "A Circle of Time"! It was assigned for us to read in english and turned out to be amazing. I am in middle school, and I'm just beggining to enjoy reading. I thought that the story was sweet and that Joshua was a really good person to trust Allison. The end was touching and also sad, but like Magda said, "you have to take the good with the bad." I thought it was so neat how Allison's surgeon was related to Joshua!

In english class, we just got done reading Circle of Time in Literature groups. I enjoyed reading the book very much. In fact, it's probably one of the best books I've read in the last couple of years. One reason i enjoyed it was because of element of suspense and the fact that you couldn't predict what was going to happen next. Your book got me hooked and I never wanted to put it down. Thank you. I hope to be an author when i grow up, and your writing in this book was so extremely percise and descriptive, it really inspired me.The novel is one of those very few books where you can't actually quess what's going to happen, and i love that! The book is wonderfully written, i enjoyed it so much! Thanks!

Hello, I'm a seventh grader at Liberty Middle School. In our Language Arts class we did literature circles(You may have noticed ALOT of us have commented) by gender and the girls read your fabulous book "A Circle of Time." EVERYONE LOVED IT!(You should write more young adult books *hint*) I really enjoyed how you made the book so easy to relate to. For example,in the beginning of the book when Allison is in a coma you compare it to a dream because most people havn't been in a coma, including me,so now I can actually connect to it. You also had some really pretty discriptions, plus the overall plot was just mind blowing. Im talking alot so I'm going to go now. Have a nice day. You'll probably be hearing from our class later in letter form, bye!

Dear Marisa, When I read A Circle of Time for class literature circles, I enjoyed the book alot. The most meaningful part to me was the very end when Alison reads the letter Joshua had written to her a century ago. Joshua dumps out his true feelings for Allison and tells her about Isa and Jose and Becky. Isa is the most intriguing character in my opinion because she spent fourteen years insane because of her quote husband and also her baby. She is an important part of the book because she is the mystery part. I adored the way you wrote so descriptively tied into a narrative prompt. one of my favorite "Golden Lines" is when Joshua and Becky (Allison) are walking through the forest when they spot a deer and your line said: "Joshua squeezed Allison's hand and gave her one of his knee-buckling smiles." You can picture it really well. Another "Golden Line" is when Allison was describing even the moon was the same on the second trip to the past: "Even the moon was identical: a silver sliver hanging among a sprinkling of stars." I love how you described the night like the moon was "hanging" among a "sprinkling" of stars. I would love to recommend this book to all of my friends because it tells you a great story of suspense and love and joy and depression all tied into one colossal knot.

In English my class read "Circle of Time". It was a great book. Once you started reading, it was hard to put down.I liked all the suspence you put in the book, and how it kept you wondering what was going to happen next. I had alot of questions throughout the book, and think it's cool how you give clues to your questions, but just enough to keep you wondering. It was an amazing book, and would be cool if you wrote a sequel to it. Keep writing books as good as this one!

November 19, 2006 Dear Ms. Montes: I am Charlette Kremer in Lewiston, Idaho and I am writing to ask you to participate in a First Book online auction by donating an autographed book. First Book is an international non-profit organization with a single mission: to give children in low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. One in every five of the children in our area lives in poverty. In the state of Idaho, one in every six children goes to bed hungry. Nationally, 61% of children living in low-income households have no age-appropriate books at home. These are the children that First Book was designed to reach. Our grants have benefited libraries, homeless and crisis shelters, schools and Head Start programs throughout North Central Idaho and a portion of Eastern Washington. In just one year we have distributed almost 13,000 books to more than 1,300 children. The First Book-LCSC advisory board, of which I am a member, is soliciting autographed books to be auctioned online. We hope you will sign one or more of your books and donate them today. One-hundred percent of the funds raised will be used to purchase books for children and your donation is tax deductible. Donations may be sent to: First Book-LCSC Lewis Clark Service Corps Lewis-Clark State College 500 8th Avenue Lewiston, ID 83501 I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to personally thank you for helping give the gift of reading to needy children. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Charlette Kremer Coordinator

I enjoyed reading the poems on this web site. I have been teaching English in Mexico for 20 years. I've also been writing since I was 14 and am about to set upon the adventure of getting some of the piled up work published. I have already published poetry in the United States, but hope to send off more material now that my children are grown and I have the time. I'll add Marisa's web site to my favorites for reference and hope it will give me luck. I enjoyed her writing very mucha and find we have much in common with our latin roots. I especially liked Abuelita...I had one like that too! Best regards, Elizabeth Robinson Canadian/Mexican

Hello! I am the author of Pokey Pig's Picnic. It was published March 2007. I am hoping that you may be interested in having my book available for sale on your website? It's an alliteration of the letter P, a story of Pokey Pig and his pals as they work together to have a picnic. You can read reviews of it on www.Amazon.com. I look forward to hearing of your interest.

I love Los Gatos Black on Halloween! It has spurred me to do some searching on the Dias de los Muertos. I have some questions about the illustrations in the book. Are the soldiers, woman in traditional flowered dress with cloth wrapped braids, and Aztec ghosts representing anyone specific? Thanks for such a fun, beautiful, interesting book, Diane

Everytime we go to the bookstore or library we check to see if there is a new one, always with the same answer, "No." PLEASE WRITE MORE!!!!! Just wanted to drop a note and say Hi! We met you and David on the Norwegian Sea. I am planning on purchasing your book for my parents. Would you be willing to autograph these for me? If this would be to much trouble please let me know, but I will send you a return UPS ticket for you to return them to me, therefore it would not cost you anything. Meeting you both on the curise was one of the highlights of our trip and we hope to someday see you again! I also wants to buy an aircraft, and i need a reliable business man or woman to partner to with me Please write me if you get a chance, but for now have a Wonderful Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!
