It would be the greatest book ever!!!(next to Something Wicked's in Those Woods:) ) Name: Joan CommentsHi Marisa I like your site very much. It's a very bright and happy site, and looks like so much fun to spend time in. Parents can visit your site with their children and introduce them to your books. Sometimes a visit to the book store is overwhelming, "so many books" and it's hard to make a decision, the children can be tired and not choose the book they really want. Good luck. Name: Lois Harris CommentsBravo! Your web site is first class. I am also a writer and member of SCBWI. I live in Washington State. Two years ago I took an early retirement and began rewriting my middle grade children's novel (waiting patiently in my desk for over ten years!), joined a critique group, began reading award-winning children's books (I'll look for yours in the Library), submitted my work to two editors at conferences, and taking their advice, began a final rewrite. What fun I've had! I will use your excellent Fun with Words page to "tweak" here and there before I submit. In my story, one of my minor character's is named Marisa. She is 20, short, dark-haired, bouncy, energetic, athletic, and warm -- a good model for the younger characters. I'll let you know if my book gets published...thanks for your informative website! I was amazed when I accidentally came across your web site. I have to say that looking at what you have accomplished makes me very proud to know that it's in the family. I have been struggling with my artistic qualities. I paint using oil, pastels, and pencil. I have been painting for the past 4 years. I'm self taught, although Papi, (Juan Montes), has an artistic flare. Growing up, I watched him sketch, and paint. I guess it's in the genes because I now have a deep desire, and passion to paint. I have sold some of my paintings as well. Enough of me, I just can't get over the fact that you are a writer, and painter. I would love to see more of both your art, and your books. I would also enjoy showing you my work. Whenever you get this message please feel free to either call me: (760) 583-2918, or email me at: diegomontes@hotmail.com. I hope to hear from you soon. Carol Name: Esther CommentsI love your books!!!!!!! Name: Todd Rowell CommentsHowdy! Howdy Lupe! Name: Tomasa Cruz CommentsWonderful books Gracias por inculcar en tu libros nuestra raza puertorriqueña. Name: Vivienne CommentsThank you for answering my extended questions about critique processes. I have had almost identical experiences to the ones you described. When I reached the point of having a regular editor/publisher of my work, and his comments were more useful than anything that went before, I stopped using anyone else. Actually, I tapered off. I tried three more sources before I quit asking anyone to read and critique. I still critique for others. It is the best education I had in fiction writing, except the professional publishers. I have the nasty habit of telling the authors the kind of things my editors told me. Those pieces of professional advice were priceless. I wanted to share. The authors I try to help want the tea parties. (Great term. I always said they wanted fuzzy grams.) Sigh. I want to share my newly finished work with others, but not in the old way, where they do not know as much as I do, especially when they are stuck in the line-editing stage, or when they can only give fuzzy grams. Hearing my experiences through you was very reassuring. Writing can be such an alone profession that we do not always know others have shared our feelings and experiences. An agent can fill the gap and make abrupt (they are busy), but priceless, suggestions. Mine got sick, so I am really flying solo right now. I have recommendations on a likely replacement. For now, your open honesty filled the hole. Name: Norma Kellam CommentsI really enjoyed reading A CRAZY MIXED-UP SPANGLISH DAY. Name: Shakila Mumtaz CommentsMarisa, I am just beginning a career as an Elementary School teacher in New York. I first fell in love with Gabi, but I know see how dedicated a writer you are with your collection of poems and picture books. I look forward to sharing your literature with my children. My summer school students are enjoying "No More Spanish" - which is outside of our predetermined curriculum. ahem... I agree very much with you views on bilingual education in the United States. Although I was born here, my mother, too, refused to speak English with us at home, and she continues to do so now. In early childhood, children soak up information like sponges. Learning languages, in particular, come almost second nature to children. At a young age, especially when suddenly immersed into a new language, I believe the human survival element becomes involved and allows children to learn new languages fairly quickly. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your inclusion literature. We need more bilingual writers - of all languages - to dispel the myth of Only-English Speaking Americanism. You're great! shakila m. I am writing on behalf of Marshall Cavendish International Asia, a publishing company based in Singapore in the Southeast Asian region. I am looking for an author for our second edition of Cultures of the World: Puerto Rico. Being a Puerto Rican and a children's book author, I thought you would be just who we need. Would you be interested in revising the book? The title was first published about 10 years ago. We need a writer with a good knowledge of Puerto Rico to correct and update the existing text as well as write a new chapter (on environmental issues) and provide information for the backmatter (which includes two recipes, three maps, economic and cultural notes, a historical timeline, and further-information references). Each book has around 120 pages, roughly half given to text and half to photographs. It is written for North American students ages 12-15. If you'd like to take on the project, we would need you to submit the materials in full by 21 Jan 2005. We will then edit the text and send you the pages for your comment some time in March/April, after which we will pay you the fee. Please contact me soon so that I can provide you with more information. I hope to hear from you very soon. Name: Heidi Schutzbach CommentsI loved your book, "A Circle of Time"! It was assigned for us to read in english and turned out to be amazing. I am in middle school, and I'm just beggining to enjoy reading. I thought that the story was sweet and that Joshua was a really good person to trust Allison. The end was touching and also sad, but like Magda said, "you have to take the good with the bad." I thought it was so neat how Allison's surgeon was related to Joshua! Name: Elora Robbani CommentsI've just read your book, "A Circle of Time". It was an amazing book, and I think you're a wonderful writer. I think it is cool how you had two view points, Hispanic and American. I can't wait to read your other books!!! Name: Kayla Foust CommentsIn english class, we just got done reading Circle of Time in Literature groups. I enjoyed reading the book very much. In fact, it's probably one of the best books I've read in the last couple of years. One reason i enjoyed it was because of element of suspense and the fact that you couldn't predict what was going to happen next. Your book got me hooked and I never wanted to put it down. Thank you. Kayla Name: Alexis Parkes CommentsMy class got a chance to read your book, A Cirle of Time. The girls in my class loved it. I enjoyed your use of descriptive paragraphs. We all talked about the book and had wished there was a second one to follow it. Thanks for writing the book. Name: Katie Colson CommentsMy class read "Circle of time" at school and I loved it. The letter at the end of the book was really sweet and it was my favorite part. It was also shocking when i found out that Becky was Isa's daughter!!!! Are you going to write a sequal to the book??? It would be really interesting if you would. I love your website. Keep writing really good books! Name: Kendall Kingsford CommentsHello. My class was assigned to read "A Circle of Time" in small groups. We had dicussions everytime we finished a certain part of the book. It was the first time I acually enjoyed lit. circles.I really enjoyed the ending where we find out Becky is Isa's daughter. I loved your descriptive ability. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book. Name: Alyx Chandler CommentsI am a 7th grader who recently finished your book "Circle of Time" for the second time (who read in in Lit. groups in English). It is positively one of my favorite books. I hope to be an author when i grow up, and your writing in this book was so extremely percise and descriptive, it really inspired me.The novel is one of those very few books where you can't actually quess what's going to happen, and i love that! The book is wonderfully written, i enjoyed it so much! Thanks! Name: Stephanie Jensen CommentsHello, I'm a seventh grader at Liberty Middle School. In our Language Arts class we did literature circles(You may have noticed ALOT of us have commented) by gender and the girls read your fabulous book "A Circle of Time." EVERYONE LOVED IT!(You should write more young adult books *hint*) I really enjoyed how you made the book so easy to relate to. For example,in the beginning of the book when Allison is in a coma you compare it to a dream because most people havn't been in a coma, including me,so now I can actually connect to it. You also had some really pretty discriptions, plus the overall plot was just mind blowing. Im talking alot so I'm going to go now. Have a nice day. You'll probably be hearing from our class later in letter form, bye! Name: Carolyn CommentsThe Cirlce of Time was the best book I've ever read. I loved the thrill and not being able to predict what will happend next. The excitement made it hard to put it down. I encourage you to write another teen's novel; this one was excellent! Name: Nabie CommentsIn my english class we read your book "A Circle of Time". I really enjoyed it. It was amazing!!! You problably got a lot of comments from our class. I loved all the suspense you put into it. It's cool how all the mysteries finally made sense in the end. It would be cool if you made a sequel. Keep writing great books! Name: Taylor Penick CommentsDear Marisa, When I read A Circle of Time for class literature circles, I enjoyed the book alot. The most meaningful part to me was the very end when Alison reads the letter Joshua had written to her a century ago. Joshua dumps out his true feelings for Allison and tells her about Isa and Jose and Becky. Isa is the most intriguing character in my opinion because she spent fourteen years insane because of her quote husband and also her baby. She is an important part of the book because she is the mystery part. I adored the way you wrote so descriptively tied into a narrative prompt. one of my favorite "Golden Lines" is when Joshua and Becky (Allison) are walking through the forest when they spot a deer and your line said: "Joshua squeezed Allison's hand and gave her one of his knee-buckling smiles." You can picture it really well. Another "Golden Line" is when Allison was describing even the moon was the same on the second trip to the past: "Even the moon was identical: a silver sliver hanging among a sprinkling of stars." I love how you described the night like the moon was "hanging" among a "sprinkling" of stars. I would love to recommend this book to all of my friends because it tells you a great story of suspense and love and joy and depression all tied into one colossal knot. Name: Sarah Hoop CommentsIn English my class read "Circle of Time". It was a great book. Once you started reading, it was hard to put down.I liked all the suspence you put in the book, and how it kept you wondering what was going to happen next. I had alot of questions throughout the book, and think it's cool how you give clues to your questions, but just enough to keep you wondering. It was an amazing book, and would be cool if you wrote a sequel to it. Keep writing books as good as this one! Name: Madeline West CommentsI thoroughly enjoyed reading Circle of Time because it was mysterious and full of adventure! The description and use of similies was incredible. A book like this, that was so well written, was impossible to put down. This was one of my favorite books!!!!! First Book is an international non-profit organization with a single mission: to give children in low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. One in every five of the children in our area lives in poverty. In the state of Idaho, one in every six children goes to bed hungry. Nationally, 61% of children living in low-income households have no age-appropriate books at home. These are the children that First Book was designed to reach. Our grants have benefited libraries, homeless and crisis shelters, schools and Head Start programs throughout North Central Idaho and a portion of Eastern Washington. In just one year we have distributed almost 13,000 books to more than 1,300 children. The First Book-LCSC advisory board, of which I am a member, is soliciting autographed books to be auctioned online. We hope you will sign one or more of your books and donate them today. One-hundred percent of the funds raised will be used to purchase books for children and your donation is tax deductible. Donations may be sent to: First Book-LCSC Lewis Clark Service Corps Lewis-Clark State College 500 8th Avenue Lewiston, ID 83501 I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to personally thank you for helping give the gift of reading to needy children. A few weeks ago by chance, I saw Juan Bobo Busca Trabajo in a local bookstore and I immediately snapped it up. I am from a Mexican-American family and my fiance is from Puerto Rico, and we are always looking for ways to share our heritages and Spanish language with our six year old son Daniel. Daniel loves to visit our relatives in Puerto Rico and adores just about anything that has to do with the island. He even sleeps with a plush coqui toy! So when I saw little Juan Bobo with his pava on the cover of your book, I knew it was a match made in heaven. We have been reading Juan Bobo nearly every night since. It appears that you will be visiting Texas State University in San Marcos, TX soon to accept a much-deserved award for your book Los Gatos Black on Halloween. I am a student at Texas State, and even though I have classes the afternoon you're holding a book signing, I am going to try to take my son to meet you. I know he (and I!) will be thrilled! Name: joe nieto CommentsMarisa, Love your website particularly the old black and whites of you when you were young... Listen. I'm a doctor and I have only 1 children's book to write....well, its already written...it is a letter that my sister wrote to my daughter, a fictional account of her travels from San Diego to Tijuana to purchase pinata's....its humor mixed with the gritty reality of Tijuana/border town during the 1970's. My sister is unaware of this book...it is a gift from me to her that someday...she would go to Barnes and Noble and find her story on the shelf. I need two things: 1. your guidance 2. an illustrator that is personally familiar with Tijuana/San Diego during the 1960-1970's. The story boards are done...I need an illlustrator...can you steer me to one? I would love that you could collaborate with me. What do you say? I work in above named security deposit company as Director of Claims. I got information concerning you from the Ghana Chamber of Commerce, then i decided to contact you believing that , you will accept to be my partner in this business.Honestly,i have watched with meticulous precision how African heads of states and Government functionaries have been using our company to move huge sums of money in denominations of US$ ,British Pound Sterling, Euro in (Cash) to their foreign partners. They bring in these consignments of money cash and secretly declare the contents as Jewelries, Gold, Diamond, and precious Stones, Family Treasure, Documents etc. Late Gen. Sani Abacha of Nigeria , Late Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire , Laurent Kabila of Congo Democratic Republic , Foday Sankoy of Sierra-Leone, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida of Nigeria, the immediate past president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo etc. All these people have hundreds of consignments deposited with our safety company. Their foreign partners, friends and relatives are currently claiming most of the consignments. A lot of them are lying here unclaimed for the past ten years. No body may ever come for them because in most cases, the certificates of deposit are never available to any body except the depositors, most of them now are dead. Sometime last year (2008), our company changed the procedure of claims of consignments. Now as soon as you are able to produce the secret information as contained in the secret file of any consignment, it will be released to you upon demand. From our records more than 120 consignments belonging to Gen. Abacha /Mobutu Sese Seko, have been claimed in the past six months. This is why I am soliciting for your co-operation and assistance. Late Gen Abacha has 25 consignments deposited with several names and codes. Six have been claimed in the past six months. Since he died, his first son also died in a plane crash, the second son is facing trial for murder and embezzlement, and the family members are under house arrest without communication. I have finished every arrangement for you to come and claim consignment tag No.1202BX containing US$ 10,000,000.00 and consignment tag No.1203BZ containing US$ 14,000,000.00. My name is Mrs. Vivian Solange.Though this medium, (Internet) has been greatly abused, I choose to reach you through it because it still remains the fastest medium of communication.I pray that this email reaches you in the best of health. Please use this money as a compensation for you as to help the churches, Mosques,Orphanage Homes and the less-privileged. Greetings to you and your family in the name of God. In my search for a reliable and God fearing person and having gotten your contact through prayers and pain-staking efforts, I have decided to Compensate you in carrying out my last wishes. I'm a 65 year old woman and from London, UK. I was a merchant and owned two businesses in London and Dubai. I was also married with two children. My husband and two children died in a car accident six years ago. Before this happened, my business and concern for making money was all I live for,I never really cared about other values in life. But since the loss of my family, I have found a new desire to assist helpless families. I have been helping orphans in phanage/motherless homes. I have also donated some money for humanitarian needs in Europe and Africa , Namely Sudan, South Africa, Cameroon, Brazil, Spain, Austria, Germany and some Asian countries. Only recently I saw on television the colossal loss of properties and livelihood people in Haiti through tremendous Earth Quake. I was moving with great pity and compassion that I decided to make this contribution on assisting people over there,I am sending this compensation amount of US$1, 500.000(One Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) to you through My Pastor In Africa Rev Fred Duke to send it to you as soon as you contact him. It is my last wish to see this Distributed to you as to help victims and less- previleged and other charity organizations. Because relatives and friends have plundered so much of my wealth since my illness, I cannot live with the agony entrusting this huge responsibility to any of them. Please, I beg you in the name of God to help me use this compensation money accordingly. Use your judgment to distribute the money and keep 10% of it to yourself. Feel free to reimburse yourself when you have the money for any cost you incur during the process of collecting and distributing the money Regards. Mrs. Vivian Solange. Name: Mr.Austin Oniwon CommentsDear Friend, My name is Mr.Austin Oniwon.I am the newly appointed Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC).This letter is in consideration of your partnership in receiving an over-invoiced contract sum of a procurement contract just executed in the above named Corporation valued US$58.45M (Fifty-Eight Million,Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars). The present Government in my country has given directive to all Federal Parastatals to compile and settle all foreign contractors being owned for contracts that has been duely executed,so my plan is to include the name that you will provide,as one of the contractors being owed in my corporation. It may also interest you to know that two years ago a similar transaction was carried out with one Mr.George Brooks of ( BROGE INTERNATIONAL TRADING CORPORATION) at #135, East 57th Street, 28th Floor,New York 10022 with telephone (212)308-7788 and telex number 6731689,after the agreement between us in which he was to take 25%of the total money transferred into his account,we were disappointed on our arrival in New York as we were told that Mr.Brooks was no longer in that address, while his telephone number was abandoned and later re-allocated to somebody else, that was how we lost our money to Mr Brooks. This time around we need a more reliable and trusted person or a reputed company to transact this project with hence this proposal to you,so if you can prove yourself to be trustworthy and ready to partake in this project then we are prepared to do business with you. What we need from you is the assurance that you will let us have our share after the transfer of the fund into your account.Having said that,I offer you 35% of the total fund,55% for me while 10% will be set aside to off-set expenses and pay the necessary taxes.I am contacting you to benefit from this gesture/project because the law of my country does not allow civil servants to operate foreign accounts while in office. If this proposal satisfies you, please contact me so that I can advice you on modalities of the transaction, and note that all modalities has been put in place and once started will take two weeks with the absolute support of all concerned.Note that this transaction is 100% risk free and totally safe and secured now or in the future.
